About the Position

WorldFish Bangladesh and South Asia office is hiring four Research Assistants in its JICA funded ‘Fisheries Development Advisor’ project under Small Scale Fisheries (SSF) program in order to meet its vision: Be the research partner of choice, delivering high impact, transformative and equitable fisheries and aquaculture solutions to reduce poverty and malnutrition in Bangladesh and South Asia. The key objective of the JICA Fisheries Development Advisor (JICA-FDA) project is to formulate good practices for strengthening the resilience of the host communities in Cox’s Bazar area who are affected due to the influx of refugees. This initiative has been built on the achievements of other WorldFish led relevant project, particularly in terms of ecosystem resilience, biodiversity conservation, and livelihood supports, but will focus mainly on the small-scale artisanal fisheries in Cox’s Bazar region.

Under the guidance of the Team Leader, and on-field supervision of Research Associate, Research Assistants will implement the planned activities at the community level with various stakeholders and partners, where applicable. The Research Assistants will be based in Cox’s Bazar (upazila sites) and will work under direct guidance of a Research Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake the project activities following the workplan developed in a participatory manner.
  • Implement all activities including livelihoods support programs being implemented in upazila site.
  • Assist WorldFish and Department of Fisheries in baseline and endline survey, monitoring and data collection activities in coastal upazila sites.
  • Collaborate closely with WorldFish staff of other research projects working in Cox’s Bazar areas.
  • Organize training to the target beneficiaries, transfer knowledge to the community people and fishers for improvement of their skills in vegetable farming and livestock reaing.
  • Assist to plan and implement training programs for community youths, men and women on alternative livelihoods and income generating activities.
  • Assist in the implementation of the programs on women empowerment, reducing child marriage amp; gender-based violence, improving food and nutrition, and livelihood diversification.
  • Assist upazila Fisheries Officer and community leaders to undertake rural development programs.
  • Assist Department of Fisheries (DoF) officials, and law enforcers, and administration at all levels in their efforts of ensuring compliance towards sustainable resources conservation and environmental improvement.
  • Extend full cooperation to Research Associate in developing monthly plan and developing fortnightly/monthly/quarterly reports.

Requirements

This position is for Bangladeshi Nationals with the following skills and qualification:

  • Bachelor of Science/Degree / Master of Science/Degree in Fisheries/Fisheries Management/Aquatic Resource Management/ Aquaculture/Marine Science amp; Fisheries/Social Science/Anthropology or equivalent degree from any recognized University/Instution.
  • Minimum 02 years work experience in Community Based Fisheries Management or Fisheries or Aquaculture development and extension project with focus on field based research activities.
  • Basic concept on socio-economic aspects of rural communities, capture fisheries and co-management.
