Position Background
Enhanced Coastal Fisheries in Bangladesh II (ECOFISH II) is an on-going project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), implemented by WorldFish. ECOFISH II has been built on the previous work of the original ECOFISH-BD project regarding Hilsa shad and other coastal fish production in the Meghna River ecosystem. ECOFISH II is working to reduce the impacts from the influx of over a million refugees on the natural resources and fishing communities along the TeknafCox’s Bazar peninsula. It is also reducing the impact of the Naf River fishing ban on the host communities in Teknaf. ECOFISH II is scaling up lessons learned from the previous project while expanding interventions for improving the livelihoods of fishing communities and enhancing biodiversity conservation in the artisanal fisheries in the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal (BOB). The ongoing conservation activities in the lower Meghna sanctuaries and the improved management of the Nijhum Dwip marine protected area (MPA) remain as an integral part of the project.
The overarching goal of ECOFISH II is improved social and ecological resilience of coastal fisheries to secure equitable food, nutrition and income benefits for fisheries communities. About the Position
The major objective of this assignment is to fulfill the objective of formulating a transboundary Hilsa management framework through reviewing existing information and online consultation ensuring involvement of the representatives from Bangladesh, India and Myanmar.
Key Responsibilities
The purpose of the assignment is achieving the specific task under Intermediate Result-1 (IR1) related to Policy Supports component of USAID’s ECOFISH II Activity. The specific purpose for the consultancy service would be the formulation of Transboundary Hilsa Management Framework to initiate a joint regional management of Hilsa involving Bangladesh, India and Myanmar focusing on common ban period declaration and management. The initiative will be very effective in improving Hilsa production through improved compliance of the ban periods for brood protection and juveniles conservations.
